Opel Corsa 'Autobest 2007' in Growing European Markets

Opel Corsa
A jury of 13 leading automotive journalists from the growing markets of Eastern and Central Europe has voted the Opel Corsa AUTOBEST 2007. The new model came first ahead of Fiat Grande Punto and Peugeot 207. We are especially pleased that the Corsa has received this award in these growing markets, said Alain Visser, Executive Director, European Marketing, Opel/Vauxhall. With more than 21,000 orders already placed in the region, our customers are also showing how fond they are of the new Corsa. Around 4.2 million cars have been registered throughout all Central and Eastern European markets so far this year. About 150,000 of these were Opel models, and the trend is growing. In Russia and Romania alone, Opel vehicle sales almost doubled between January and November 2006 compared with the previous same-year period. In the Ukraine, sales figures even rose by a good 117 percent.

It was a very tough competition with strong opposition. The new Corsa came out on top thanks to its overall value for money, and proved strong in many of the criteria adopted by the jury said Dan Vardie, AUTOBEST Chairman. The new Corsa represents a revolution compared with the previous generation. There is a completely new philosophy behind the car and this has paid off.

The jury took 13 criteria into consideration when selecting the AUTOBEST car winner. Each category was worth a specific number of points depending on its importance. With 60 out of a total of 240 points, value for money was a very important criterion. Other key regional issues, such as distribution network, service and spare parts availability, fuel consumption, versatility and cargo capacity were worth 20 points each. Altogether, these criteria accounted for more than one half of the total number of points. Other issues common to all European countries, such as new technology, handling, dynamics and environmental compatibility were also weighted. Worth a maximum of 30 points, design is becoming increasingly important to customers in this region.

The international AUTOBEST jury represents almost all the important growing markets in Europe. The organization is the only international independent jury that focuses on best-buy choice for mainstream customers. This years AUTOBEST jury included members from 13 countries in the region, covering a virtual market of more than 250 million people. Each jury member is an outstanding automotive journalist and a respected voice in his country. AUTOBEST is the second-largest independent motoring jury in Europe. The sixth AUTOBEST AWARDS CEREMONY will take place in early February 2007 in Poland.
